About

Your house has a price tag. Most owners never see it.

Frugal Beans publishes cost guidance on home repairs, home service contracts, utilities and groceries. The goal is to put the number in front of you before a contractor is standing at your door.

Why this exists: the bill arrives uninvited, but the cost was always knowable

Most households track food, subscriptions and fuel with some discipline. The house, which is the largest recurring cost in the budget, gets almost none. A water heater fails, a furnace quits, a compressor goes, and the number lands as a shock, even though every system had a known service life and a documented cost range the whole time.

Frugal Beans exists to close that gap. Every major home system has a failure age, a repair cost range and a threshold at which replacement beats repair. That information is publicly available, scattered across contractor invoices and industry data, but rarely assembled anywhere a homeowner can use it before the call. This site assembles it, so the reference arrives before the emergency rather than after.

The goal is not to make you a home repair expert. It is to make sure you are never surprised by a number that a five minute read could have prepared you for.

What you will find here

Four cost areas, one site. Each one checked before publishing.

Home repair costs

Cost ranges for furnace replacement, water heater replacement, air conditioning repair and other major system failures. Each article names the range, the factors that push the number higher, and the age at which replacement usually beats repair.

Home service contracts

A plain explanation of what a home service contract covers, what it excludes, and what it costs annually set against the repair prices in the ledger. No sales language, just the structure.

Electric and gas bills

Practical steps to reduce monthly utility costs without capital investment or a contractor. The focus is the highest leverage actions in a house ten years old or older.

Grocery and frugal habits

Cost reduction at the grocery store and in everyday spending, with specific tactics rather than generic advice. This is the last layer of household cost control, after the house itself is handled.

Who writes this: a person, not a mascot

Bo is the character you see across this site and on social. Bo is the brand, not the author. Everything published here is written and checked by a person.

Victor M.

Victor M. started Frugal Beans after a $1,900 furnace repair he never saw coming showed him how little homeowners are told about what their house will cost. He has owned a home for 38 years. He writes and checks every cost guide on the site against contractor quotes, manufacturer data and government sources, and updates an article when the underlying cost data changes. Questions or corrections go to support@frugalbeans.com, and every message is read.

Our standards: what we will not do

Every article on this site is written to a fixed editorial standard. These are the four commitments that govern everything published here.

  • We do not publish a cost figure we cannot support with contractor data, government data or industry documentation.
  • We do not write a recommendation for an offer whose terms we have not read.
  • We do not present a paid placement as editorial content without a clear disclosure.
  • We do not update articles on a schedule chosen for traffic reasons. We update them when the underlying cost data changes.

How this site makes money

Frugal Beans earns a commission when a reader clicks an affiliate link and completes a qualifying purchase or sign up. Partner offers are placed where the editorial content has already established why the product is relevant, not inserted at random, and each partner is named beside its link.

A commission does not change the editorial position on a product. If the terms or the cost structure of an offer do not serve the reader described on this page, the offer does not appear. The affiliate relationship is disclosed directly beneath every partner link on the site.

What we are not

Frugal Beans is not a budgeting site. Its focus is the cost of keeping a house running, not budget templates or savings rate frameworks. This site is also not a homeowners insurance comparison site and does not evaluate, rank or recommend insurance policies. A home service contract is a service agreement, not insurance, and this site never treats the two as the same thing.

Nothing here is professional financial, legal or contracting advice for your situation. Cost ranges vary by region, equipment age and contractor, so treat any figure as a range to verify locally. Read any service contract in full before purchasing.
